Student Video Analysis #2

Mise-en-scene:

Costume -

The costume in this video fits the conventions of the genre of this song. Everyone is wearing either chinos or skinny jeans with a T-shirt. The actors hair fits the genre as well, with it being quite long or short.

Actors -

The actors in this video are good at the job they have been assigned. This is because the guitars have been played perfectly and fit the pace of the song and the chord changes. The vocalist has done a great job of learning the lyrics and making it look like he is actually singing instead of miming.

Make-up -

There is no make-up used in this video by the actors because make-up is rarely used by males in this genre.

Props -

The props in this video are used to good effect. The main ones are two guitars, one bass guitar and on microphone. The two guitars are in time with each other and the amps make it look like they are actually playing the song. The microphone makes it seem like the vocalist is actually singing the song instead of miming it like many other videos have done. The mobile phones play an important role in the storyline of the video because it lets the audience see what life at home is like for two people.

Setting -

The main setting for this video is in a room that has been made to look like a warehousy recording room. Other settings include a field at the start in both day and night, and some snippets of traffic which I am assuming was filmed on a road during the night time. This fits with the conventions of the genre because music videos by bands of the genre do tend to do their video in a studio setting. The home setting gives the audience a good idea of casual life when in a relationship with the texting each other.

Editing -

The editing in this video matches the pace of the song well. There is a wide variety of shots used and these are used to good effect. This lip syncing is really good which is key to making a good music video which this one is. The guitar playing is in time with the music which is another good thing. I can't find anything bad to say about the editing.

Lighting -

The lighting in this video is all low key because of the genre it is in. It matches the conventions of the genre by not being too dark or too light, but low enough so you are still able to see the band playing. When the camera is round the back of the band, the lighting creates silhouette figures which adds a nice touch to the video.

Camera -

There is a wide variety of camera shots/movements/angles used in this music video. They are put to good use by having close-up shots of the vocalist so you can easily see the lip synching. There is a lot of camera movements such as panning and arching which adds movement to the video.
