Student Magazine Advert Analysis

Good
  • They thought about brand identity when making this poster as it is the same artwork as the one on the album cover.
  • They've put the name of the artist and the song in red which is the same as the text on the cd cover.
  • They're got a release date on it and the fact that it's red makes it stand out like the rest of the text.
  • The ratings and the comments it got from the magazines that this genre would typically be found in makes it look realistic.
Bad
  • The red writing in the bottom right corner of the poster is hard to read as it is in red on a black background. I would have changed this to white.

Editing The Magazine Advert

To start off with, I took the Jack Daniels label and erased all of the writing. I then used the free transform tool to enlarge this to fit the size of the magazine advert. I had to move parts of the label to the middle of the page on each side so that there wasn't a large black gap in the advert and so that it looked even.
After doing the label editing, I used the text tool to create the information and websites at the bottom. I used Trajan Pro font because it is the bands trademark text font. I also put a release date on the bottom. The information I gave the advert was: release date, where to buy (hot topic and iTunes) and the bands official website.
After I had done that, I had to get the band name logo onto the advert. I went to Google and got the logo. I had to erase some of the colouring because it wasn't totally black but and had a hint of grey. So I painted over that using black which was the hardest part of the editing process as there were many little areas that I had to be careful with.
I then got the bands other logo off Google and using the magic wand tool, got it on to the advert after a struggle with the tool. Again, I had to rub pieces out due to the colour difference, but I got there in the end and put it where it originally said "No 7 Brand" in the oval shape.

Final Magazine Advert

This is my final magazine advert for my digipak. The main idea behind it was to take the Jack Daniels label and edit out all of the whiskey information and type and edit on everything to do with Black Veil Brides that is relevant including the release date, name of the band, name of the album, websites and the band logo. I have used exactly the same artwork on this as I did on the cd cover to create a clear brand identity and so people can relate it to the artist. I found it quite easy to do because we are using Photoshop in our current ICT unit so I know my way around Photoshop quite well and I was able to find everything I needed easily. I would expect this advert to be seen in magazines such as Kerrang! and RockSound because these magazines cover this genre of music as well as other sub-genres of rock.

Brand Identity

A brand is the identity of a specific product, service or business. It can take many forms including name, sign, slogan or colour. The brand shows certain artists, for example, Black Veil Brides' album Set The World On Fire, has exactly the same artwork on both the poster and the cd. It also has an image of the band in their make-up which is what they are known for.

The poster gives the details of when the album is released and where you can buy the first single from the album.

The album cover and the magazine advert for Blink 182's Neighbourhoods link well together because they both show the artwork for the album. The images are the same as it gives the artist their own brand identity.

The album cover and magazine advert for Green Day's album UNO have the same colour scheme. This is to give the album its own identity. The album is featured on the bottom of the poster as part of a trilogy of albums that the band has released. The album cover has a picture of the vocalists face because he is the one that started the band and there is an image of the three members on the poster.

Music Video Feedback

We had a class feedback session on our music videos. The class like mine but they said it needed a few improvements. They liked the initial idea of the narrative, the switch between narrative and performance, the black and white during the narrative and the filter that I had used throughout the video.

The feedback I got was to speed up the beginning sequence of footage as it didn't match the pace of the song. The flashing light were in some clips of the solo and not in others. I was also told to play around with colour control as some of the performance parts were lighter than other performance parts.

With this feedback, I went and changed the intro to an acceptable speed which made the video look better and it matched the pace of the song. I corrected the flashing lights in the solo so that there weren't any parts where they were flashing and then some parts where they wasn't. I had a look at the colour correction but I couldn't get the hang of it so I just left it to how it was.

Digipak Feedback

We had a class feedback session on the design of our digipaks. The feedback I got from the class was that they all like little bits from each idea I had. The first idea was the Jack Daniels theme on the front with everything erased except the white outlines, and on the back was a still shot from the performance of all the instruments on the ground with the track listing and all the copyright above it. My second idea was to have a still shot from my video of the microphone on the floor with the artist name above it and the name of the album below it, and on the back I was going to use a guitar pick outline for the track listing and have all the copyright underneath it. My third idea was to have a guitar pick outline with the name of the album in the center of the front panel and the band name above that, and the back would have been a guitar neck shot from my video with the track listing on the strings with all the copyright underneath. The class opted for the guitar neck and the Jack Daniels theme. The guitar neck and some positive criticism from one of the class who said it would be a good idea to have the guitar so its Guitar Hero style. I took this advice and made my digipak.

First Idea              second idea         third idea

Feedback On Magazine Adverts

We had a class feedback session on our magazine adverts for our digipak. The feedback I got was that the class liked my first idea because of the use of the Jack Daniels label which ties in with the song choice title. Some of the class liked my second idea, but one of the class pointed out that it looks as though I'm advertising a tour by the band. In the end, I went for my first idea as it was the preferred option by the class.

First idea

Second idea

Magazine Advert Ideas

My first idea was to take the front cover from my digipak and enlarge it. I got this idea from the song title "Youth and Whiskey". What I did was take the Jack Daniels label and erase everything except for the white outlines and then just edited the content below on to it.

My second idea was to use a guitar neck with all of the information underneath. I got this idea from the back of my digipak I had done for the album covers. Originally, this idea came from the solos in the song I have done as the guitars are so dominant all the way through.

Making of The Final Digipak

This is my final digipak design. It took a lot of effort and hard work to get it right and I am pleased with the end result.
For the front cover of my digipak, I used the Jack Daniels label and erased all the white writing on it and replaced it with the text and logos I needed. I used the label as the song title mentions whiskey and I thought it was an appropriate idea to use. In the feedback session, the class told me that they preferred this idea to the rest of them.

The back cover of my digipak is a guitar neck edited onto a black background. To get only the neck of the guitar, I used the Polygonal Lasso tool. The reason why I chose the neck of the guitar is because of the two shredding solos in the song. In the feedback session, the class told me that they preferred this idea to the rest of them. I used the text tool to do the track listing and to also list the names of the band members.
For the inside front of my digipak, I have chosen to put the lyrics next to still images I took from my video. I chose to do the images in black and white because the narrative is all in black and white. I used the text tool to write out the lyrics and I used Trajan Pro 5.5 font to write it. I used Trajan Pro for all the text I used on the digipak.

For the inside back of my digipak, I used a still image of the vocalist as the storyline revolves around them. I had to flip the image otherwise it would have been upside down in the final product when it had been cut out.
To make the digipak more realistic, I used the record label logo, DVD video label and a barcode. I got the two logos off google and I got the barcode off a free barcode generator.

Location Updates

Originally, I wanted to film in Lincoln, but due to band problems and reliability issues, I had to move my filming to Market Rasen. I used Dan's house on Jameson Bridge Street for the house scene, Queen Street and Linwood Road for the street scenes, Tesco for the second bench scene, and De Aston School upstairs Drama room for the whole of the performance.

Changes To The Cast #3

I am no longer using George Nearn in my music video as he has let me down when I thought I could rely on him. I will be bringing in Jack Sherlock to take his place on the drums.

Editing update #2

I have now finished the narrative of my music video in the editing process. It is looking like what I wanted it to be like so far and all I need to do now is to edit my performance so a standard that I am happy with.

Filming Update #2

I have now filmed the performance part for my video. I did this on Tuesday 28th October after school in the upstairs drama studio. The things I struggled with was mainly getting all the equipment up there as a lot of it is quite heavy. Other than that, everything ran smoothly and I was able to complete the performance in an hour and a half. I have no other filming to do as I have got both the narrative and the performance parts fully filmed.

Editing Update #1

I have edited the majority of my narrative so far. All I need to edit for the narrative now is the main character/vocalist walking round the streets at night. The editing process was fairly simple as I had got myself a lot of footage for the narrative which I could go through and find the best clips for each stage of the video. I have got a mixture of long and short takes within the narrative so I am able to mix it up a bit.

Filming Update #1

I have filmed all of my narrative over two days, the 9th and 10th of October, and I am now waiting for people to be available to be able to film my performance which is all I need to do. Overall, those two days were very successful as it didn't take long for me to get all of the footage I needed. The things I struggled were the part where Dan was walking up the stairs to a bench as I had to do a pan/zoom out shot and I found it quite difficult as I don't have a steady hand. Another thing I struggled with was the zooming in shot of Dan as he got up and walked away from the camera. Some people really annoyed me, first reason being that the previous main character I had chosen, (Callum), had filmed the house scene perfectly, and then when I needed to film the street scenes, I asked him if he was free the night before and he said he was, but the next day I got a text saying "I really cba tonight, can't you get someone to fill in?" So I sacked him from the main character role and chose Dan instead as he is more reliable. The second thing that really took me to the edge was that the band I was in and formed myself had agreed to do my performance for me, but every time I tried to film it, someone wouldn't show up. I then tried to organise a day where I could do it without two people that weren't even involved in this project, and I then got kicked out of it. So I couldn't do any filming for the performance whatsoever.

Final Storyboard

Changes To The Cast #2

James Hartley will no longer be in my video as he has a gig that he has to play with his band, so there will only be one guitarist in the video instead of two.

Target Audience - Social Class

I did the social class test on the BBC website to find out what social class my target audience is and this is what it came up with. This told me that lots of people in this group are young and that they enjoy a cultured social life. This made me decide to challenge this social class by having my main character, Dan, not enjoy a cultured social life until the end of the video where he goes off laughing and joking with his band mates. I am also challenging this by having my main character drink whiskey in the video which is more associated with the upper class as it is a more expensive kind of drink.

Target Audience Research - UK Tribes

I have chosen to look at UK Tribes because is allows me to look at my chosen genre which is hardcore music. They have the following information on the hardcore audience:

Hard-core is the ultimate Alternative Tribe, drawing on the heritage of punk rock and spawning the Straight Edge movement…

Though Hard-core is a new addition to UK Tribes (it’s only recently regained sufficient momentum to genuinely warrant inclusion), this Tribe has its roots in the punk rock scene, originating in LA in the late 1970s. California’s Black Flag are often referred to as the godfathers of Hard-core.
The spirit of the Tribe resolves around two core values – self-expression and individuality. Hard-core Kids are passionate about the Hard-core sound, a screaming genre of punk with severe tempo changes, double bass in the drums, and dirty chords from the guitarists (heavily distorted, tapping into any feedback and harmonic noises available!) Tribe members will actively support independent record shops and local, home-grown bands.
Image is key to the Tribe, and the look is not so dissimilar to the Hipsters – think turned up skinny jeans, tight fitting band tees, plaid shirts and Vans. Tribe members will often have tattoos, showing their creative side through full-scale sleeves or individual flash pieces. As Skin Deep columnist Paul Sweeney says, “Nothing shows commitment to self-expression like custom tattoos and body modification."

This has told me that fans of this genre like the screaming aspect of songs and tempo changes, and the song that I have chosen to do has both of these. It also says that they like the sound of tapping and harmonics of the guitar along with the chord progression.

The distinctive Emo look and sound has made them one of the most famous and recognisable Tribes of the last decade. Emos haven’t lost their love of horror or their association with self-harm, but are increasingly connected to other Tribes…

Emo is a Tribe defined by its music – short for ‘emotional’, the word ‘emo’ first appeared in NME in 1995. With origins in Washington DC’s 80s hard-core scene, big bands like Fall Out Boy, Bullet For My Valentine and My Chemical Romance now typify the scene. The latter’s recent break up has only served to cemented their legendary status amongst Emos. Emerging Emo talent dominates the Kerrang! tours of today, with the likes of Black Veil Brides and Fearless Vampire Killers keeping the Emo spirit in chat rooms and the charts alike.

Typically a younger (16-19) tribe, the Emo look is familiar to even the least-youth-savvy. A distinct mix of Goth and Indie, think dyed black hair, eyeliner (for guys and girls alike) black clothing and Dr Martens. However, Emos aren’t restricted to the ‘Daria’ aesthetic; their proximity to other Alt Tribes like Scene Kids means hair dye jobs in red, blue and purple are huge – as are Skater brands.

Horror and darkness have long been associated with Emos – Buffy The Vampire Slayer anyone? However the popularity of magic, zombies and vampires over the last decade means Emos are now in close quarters to other young Tribes like Nerds and Fan Girls – Twilight in particular made it suddenly cool to like the dark side…

The focus on ‘dark’ music, fashion and outlook on life has meant Emos often receive ridicule from other Tribes and adults who deride Emo as an ‘attention seeking phase’. However self-harming and suicide is a real, lasting issue in the scene – forum usernames like ‘xXSilent-SuicideXx’ ‘Princess-of-Pain’ and ‘xSuicideBloodx’ are common. Emos are very active online and have a strong sense of community, and a new generation are successfully raising awareness of mental health issues, promoting movements such as ‘SIAD’ – Self Injury Awareness Day.

This information tells me that the fans of the genre I have chosen all dress up in dark colours and dark make up to look like their idols, some people get their hair cut the same as well. It also tells me that many of the fans have blogs under depressing usernames that are to do with self-harm and suicide and that they watch programmes like Buffy and films such as Twilight.

Idea Behind Video

The idea behind my music video is, the Vocalist of a band who joins the performance aspect of the video after the first chorus. The vocalist is going through a rough time and nothing is going right for him. He is found in his house, almost finished drinking a full bottle of Jack Daniels Whiskey before going to throw it at a wall, by the other four members of the band as he asked them to go round as he was feeling down. They turn up at the house and walk into the room he is in, just as the bottle is raised and the vocalist is ready to throw it. One of the other members grabs his hand and tells him not to do it as it isn't worth the effort and drags him back to his feet. A few days later in the centre of Lincoln, he is yet again found in an upsetting mood, sat against a wall with his head in his hands, where one of the members come up to him, pulls him to his feet, and asks him if he would like to be the vocalist in his band. The two of them walk to where the band practise and the vocalist then gets a microphone, and during the first solo, he plugs it into the PA system and that is where the performance takes over the rest of the video.

Changes To The Cast

Since I have been let down by three of my band members, I have not been able to film until I have replaced them. So the new casting is as follows:

Lead Guitar - James Hunter (me)
Rhythm Guitar - James Hartley
Drums - George Nearn
Vocals - Robert Crewe
Bass Guitar - Callum Codd

I need to allow time for the new members to learn the song properly and will start filming as soon as possible.

Update on Ideas

No chance of a concert feel to the video so it will all be performance after the first chorus

Props

5-string bass to be used by Callum Codd(not actual bass). Callum will be supplying his own bass for the video and we are using it to fit in with the conventions and so that there are enough performers.

Jack Daniels Tennessee Whiskey bottle to be almost thrown at a wall by Robert "Teddy" Crewe. This will be supplied by myself and I am using this because of a storyline that goes with the title of the song.

BC Rich Mockingbird PRO X to be used by me. I am supplying this as I own this make and model of guitar. I am using it because it fits the props convention of the genre because Black Veil Brides' (the band of the song i am covering) Jake Pitts uses this guitar to create the tone he has.

Pearl Drum kit to be used by George Nearn. The place I am filming is providing this as it is in a music practise room. I am using this because it will keep the bassist and guitarist in time with each other.

Secondary Targety Audience Research

In this post I will be picking videos off YouTube that are in the same genre of the song I am using for my music video.

Knives and Pens - Black Veil Brides - 23,195,042 views
The Last Fight - Bullet For My Valentine - 3,110,913 views
Not The American Average - Asking Alexandria - 13,649,739 views
Make It Out Alive - Yashin - 106,103 views
Cold - AxeWound - 1,195,249 views
This War Is Ours - Escape The Fate - 3,579,175 views

This shows that the genre is popular among the audience and all these videos are ones with a lot of preformance in which is why I chose to look at them. The thing that helps these bands get the amount of views they get on their videos is that they get reviewed by magazines such as Rock Sound and Kerrang. People who associate themselves with the genre then go and buy these magazines and read up the reviews, making them want to watch the video. After people who like this genre watch the video, they sometimes go on to social network sites such as Twitter, Facebook, etc. and post it up on there for their friends and other people around the world to watch. This way of sharing music videos is the best way for bands to get more people into their fan-base.

Student Video Analysis #3

Camera

The variety of shots in the video is great, there are loads of shots from several angles. The main camera shot is the mid shot of the singer putting all to focus of her, not the surrounding areas.

Editing

There is good use of slow motion edits and what i find interesting the fades of which the boyfriend will fade away within the shot. This shows a excellent level of editing skills throughout the whole video. The story is told through editing also, with the flashbacks/ memories being black and white it is easy to establish the memories from reality.  There is also a lot of fades within the song with can make sense due to the lyrics in the song. There are some bad elements with the editing. one of them being in a few shots, the music is way out of sync with the image. This is an amateur mistake, and looses the effect/emotion the video has been portraying.

Mise - en - Scene:

Costume

Throughout the video there is a range of costumes for the artist, which can be appropriate to the video but showing different days where she thinks about the boyfriend.

Actors

the acting in this is not as good as it could have been. The first bit at the train station, the girl should have acted in surprise when she felt a hand on her shoulder, and then begin to cry because there is no one there.

Make-up

The make-up in this video is primarily used on the main singer as it is able to show some kind of emotion, I'm not too sure what it is.

Lighting

The lighting throughout the video is relevant to certain moments of the song. In some parts, it is lighter as it has been filmed outside, and in some other parts, it is a slightly lower tone of lighting for example, near the start when the piano is being played.

Student Video Analysis #2

Mise-en-scene:

Costume -

The costume in this video fits the conventions of the genre of this song. Everyone is wearing either chinos or skinny jeans with a T-shirt. The actors hair fits the genre as well, with it being quite long or short.

Actors -

The actors in this video are good at the job they have been assigned. This is because the guitars have been played perfectly and fit the pace of the song and the chord changes. The vocalist has done a great job of learning the lyrics and making it look like he is actually singing instead of miming.

Make-up -

There is no make-up used in this video by the actors because make-up is rarely used by males in this genre.

Props -

The props in this video are used to good effect. The main ones are two guitars, one bass guitar and on microphone. The two guitars are in time with each other and the amps make it look like they are actually playing the song. The microphone makes it seem like the vocalist is actually singing the song instead of miming it like many other videos have done. The mobile phones play an important role in the storyline of the video because it lets the audience see what life at home is like for two people.

Setting -

The main setting for this video is in a room that has been made to look like a warehousy recording room. Other settings include a field at the start in both day and night, and some snippets of traffic which I am assuming was filmed on a road during the night time. This fits with the conventions of the genre because music videos by bands of the genre do tend to do their video in a studio setting. The home setting gives the audience a good idea of casual life when in a relationship with the texting each other.

Editing -

The editing in this video matches the pace of the song well. There is a wide variety of shots used and these are used to good effect. This lip syncing is really good which is key to making a good music video which this one is. The guitar playing is in time with the music which is another good thing. I can't find anything bad to say about the editing.

Lighting -

The lighting in this video is all low key because of the genre it is in. It matches the conventions of the genre by not being too dark or too light, but low enough so you are still able to see the band playing. When the camera is round the back of the band, the lighting creates silhouette figures which adds a nice touch to the video.

Camera -

There is a wide variety of camera shots/movements/angles used in this music video. They are put to good use by having close-up shots of the vocalist so you can easily see the lip synching. There is a lot of camera movements such as panning and arching which adds movement to the video.

Student Video Analysis #1

Mise-en-scene:
Costume -
The costume in this video is casual and smart as the start of it is in a school. The casual dress is used a lot in videos of this genre. It shows everyday life of a group of people that suffer with abuse from their partners. It shows that the people involved in the video are the kind of people who go out and socialise with other people.

Actors -
The actors in the video are well used in connection of the genre. This is shown by the main characters as they portray the domestic abuse in relationships really well. The way they show the domestic abuse in the video is by showing the couples arguing and then one of each couple either beating the other, or one of them breaking up and then the other retaliates in a violent manor.

Make-up -
The make-up used in this video is used primarily for the bruising and blood that the victims get when being beaten. You can clearly see that in one scene when the girl is looking in the mirror, that she has been beaten due to the positioning of the make-up around her eyes and fake blood coming out of her nose. I like this use of make-up because it shows the signs of domestic abuse within a relationship.

Props -
I think that there could be more use of props in the video, as the only prop used in the video is a mobile phone when someone has broken up with their partner which tells the storyline and leads up to the domestic abuse.

Setting -
The setting of this video is in a school for parts of the beginning and the end. The rest of it is filmed in houses or on the street. This setting almost copies the original video because it is set in a hotel. It is an appropriate setting for the storyline because not much domestic violence happens in a school, but more at their home.

Editing -
The editing in this video isn't far off from matching the pace of the song, but it is a little bit out. Some of the shots are a bit long for the pace of the song as this is quite a quick song so the editing should be a little bit quicker. There are times in the video when the editing pace matches the song but overall, I think that it could be a bit quicker, especially because of the genre it is in. I like the use of the quick editing just after the breakdown and I also like the use of black and white when the girl is emerging from the bath. The clip right at the end with the reversed shot of the girl  is good as it show her going back to the start of the storyline, like she's setting out to change things during her day. The lip synching in some of the shots is out of time but some of it is in time.

Lighting -
The lighting in the video is appropriate for the time of day it is. It also fits the story of the video as it is light when the couples are having fun, and it is low key when they are fighting/arguing/being abusive. The lighting of the dancers at the start reflects their life as being dull because they are in an abusive relationship.

Camera -
There is a wide range of camera shots used in this video. The majority of them are still shots which doesn't add any movement to the video. The shots that are handheld such as the one of the girl running up the stairs is effective because it suggests that she is scared due to the shakiness of the camera and the fact that her boyfriend is chasing her. There are a lot of close-up shot of the actors to show their emotions and make-up. They are used to show the bruising and bloodiness of the actors after their domestic abuse. They are also used to show the lip synching in a lot of the shots.

Target Audience Interview

From this target audience interview. I have come to the conclusion that my target audience is in the 15-18 year old age range. It tells me that some people like the hardcore rock music, but are a bit wary of the screaming within the songs they produce. People are bored of the same storyline in songs which is mainly a break up and a depressed woman or man involved so I will not bring this idea into my music video. The target audience for the video will be for people who like to hang out with friends and listen to music a lot. Some people only like particular songs from certain band within the genre so I will create a feel to the video that some people can relate to.

Casting

This is my cast for my music video:

Colin Smith - Drums
Matt Richardson - Bass
Myself - Guitar
Robert Crewe - Vocals
Matt Briley - Guitar

I have chosen Colin to be the drummer because he is one of my best friends and he is also the drummer of my own band. We get along well and he is able to pitch in with ideas. He also learns the songs which means it will be easier to edit.

I chose Matt Richardson to be my bassist as I have previously worked with him in another music video for a student last year in his video for Hello Cold World by Paramore. I have also worked in a band previously to the one I am currently in and he learns the songs to make editing easier. He is a really good friend and I know he won't let me down.

I have chosen Robert to be the vocalist in the video because he is the vocalist of my band and he is good in front of a camera so he knows what he is doing. He is a really good friend and I know he wont let me down.

I have chosen Matt Briley to be my second guitarist in this music video because he is able to learn songs quickly which ties in well with the time scale in which I have to work in. I have also worked with him previously in a different band and we communicate really well musically. He is a really good friend and i know he wont let me down.

Analysis Of Music Videos #3

The third and final video I will be analysing is Fearless Vampire Killers' "Bow Ties On Dead Guys" as it fits in with the Hard Rock genre. I am analysing this video because it fits in with the genre of the song I have chosen to do for my video. To analyse the video I will be using CMINTS which stands for:
C - Costume
M - Mise-en-scene
I - Iconography
N - Narrative
T - Themes
S - Sound

Costume

The costume in the video fits in with the genre of hard rock because the outfits they are wearing are mostly black and only a few members of the band are wearing different colours such as white, but the white is under the black. The vocalist has an "emo" haircut with one side of his head shaved and dyed jet black with a red streak from left to right. Three of the other members have darker hair and one of them has a brighter hair colour but it's not too bright to go against the conventions of the genre.

Mise-en-scene

Mise-en-scene includes all parts of CLAMPS which stands for; Character, Lighting, Actors, Make-up, Props and Setting.

Character

The characters in this video are the band itself, some strange masked figures and a guy with a gun. The characters have been chosen for this video because they fit the title of the song. The masked figures may signify dead guys, however they aren't wearing bow ties, the only people in the video that are wearing bow ties are the lead vocalist and lead guitarist.

Lighting

The lighting in this video is low key to represent the tone of the song. It sets the scene for a darker appearance for the band itself. It is effective in the storyline of this video because it shows how the members of the band are fighting for their lives in the sense of that the masked figures are wanting them dead. In the performance parts of the video, the lighting is brighter to say that the band is prepared for a fight.

Actors

The actors in this video are the band itself, five other people on a balcony and five people who are out to kill the band. Instead of the band being only in the performance, they have chosen to take part in the storyline as they can tell it better as they know what the song is about. In one part of the video, the lead singer, Kier is laid on the floor but sat up a little bit, with one of the other characters bending over him in his face as to say that the masked character is going to try and kill him.

Make-up

The make-up used in the video is a mixture of eyeliner and white facial powder. The eyeliner is being worn by all the band members and the white powder is worn by all of the members as well, some of the members have the white powder on their clothing as well. This is used to create an old and dusty feel to the video as it is staged in a dusty theatre type of setting.

Props

The props used in the video are the bands instruments in the performance, a gun, and several flags. the instruments show off the talent that the band has, as not many people have heard of them so they want to get the message of their as talented as any other band across. The gun in the video is carried by one of the other actors and is aimed at the band individually but is never fired at anyone. The flags are red and white on each side, the band has the red flags and the other actors have the white ones. These symbolise that the other actors are pure to the heart but on the outside they are the exact opposite. The red ones symbolise that the band are sinners on the inside but they are the opposite of that on the outside, as they have done nothing wrong.

Setting

The setting for the video is in an old theatre as it gives enough space for the band to perform alongside the actors. The look of the music video is quite thetrical so this setting suits the song well with the lyric in the chorus "burning down my favourite haunts, yeah". This lyric could mean that the bands favourite haunt is a theatre, which may be why they held the video in a theatre.

Iconography

The iconography in the video is one that is hard to see to the audience that aren't into this kind of music. The basic message of this song is about people putting you down by calling you a freak and a weirdo. The signs in this video/song that tell you not to listen to them are mainly in the chorus as the lyrics are,
"So kick and scream all you want,
And burn down my favourite haunts, yeah
We'll see who's laughing in the end
Light up the funeral pyres,
But you know what you get when you play with fire
We'll see who's laughing in the end"
The message in the chorus is that you can let anyone say anything about you or to you, but in the end, you'll be the one laughing in their faces in the future.

Narrative

The narrative in this video a mixture of deadly situations and battle scenes with the band and the other characters. In one shot, Kier goes down hurt and is aided by one of his bandmates back up to his feet. The rest of the narrative is basically about the way that the and can escape from the other actors and survive their ordeal against them. In the end, both sides get away alive and the video ends with a shot of the band in a kind of "that's it, run away!" pose.

Themes

The theme of the song is telling you that no matter what anoyone says to you or does to you, however old you are, that later on in life, you will be laughing in their faces at everything they have done to you.

Sound

The sound in the song is a mixture of palm-muting, octaves and open power chords with the guitars. There are vocal harmonies which you can hear over the top of Kier (lead singer). Also, there is another vocal style which isnt very common in the genre, where one singer sings one line and the other speaks a line over the top. Before the last chorus, there is a few notes played on the pentatonic scale after the little breakdown.
